Our Church Buildings: St Anne’s New Somerby and St John the Evangelist in Spitalgate

St Anne’s New Somerby  was completed in 1912 and is built of brick in the Arts and Craft style to replace a mission church built of corrugated steel which was affectionally known as the Tin Tabernacle.  There are nods to William Morris in the lead tracery in the frosted class windows.  St Anne’s is an important building built as it was as part of a program of new church buildings initiated by Bishop Edward King.  There is a photograph of the great man in the sanctuary which is a later addition to the original building built in the 1960s.
St Anne’s is a light and airy building with moveable chairs.  It is the venue for parish fayres in the summer and at Christmas time as well as plays and concerts.

St John the Evangelist in Spitalgate
is a grade II listed building built in 1841 of Ancaster Stone and was designed by Anthony Salvin who also designed the very impressive Harlaxton Hall situated in the village to the west of Grantham.

It was originally built for the workers of one of the major manufacturing companies in the area and at it's height would have held around a thousand people on its' dark stained pews which were installed at the time of construction.
It has a very find carved Rood scene over the entrance to the Chancel which was originally supported by a fine screen which was moved in the latter part of the 20th century to the west end of the Nave creating a large Narthex which serves as a gathering point for the procession of the bride and her attendants
It is a popular venue for weddings as it has a long central aisle giving a bride a very grand entrance.
There has been over the years, a fine musical and choral tradition associated with St John's however owing to a number of factors this has declined in recent years precipitated by the sad death of our long serving Musical Director Mr Geoff Winter BEM in 2018.

The church is found on the south side of the town close to the mainline railway station. More info about the building can be found on this unofficial external site.

The church is currently being used by Christmas GRACE as a toy bank, and distribution center for household goods and foodbank vouchers. Christmas GRACE is open everyday from 1pm -3pm.
